12:21 pm - New plan

Chris has offered his house in order to save some of us a drive. he said he can't host so many people, though. So me, adam, rob, charles, and austin, if he wants, are going to go over there. I suppose vicki can host at her house as well and that will save you guys a drive also.
So that's our plan currently...

1:21 pm - Feedback, schedules, etc.

As one of the newer players here, and probably the one (with the exception of John) w/ the least amount of experience, i don't really have any complaints on how the group works, or what cards should be allowed or people not being fair. I've been reading through all the posts and just don't understand what the problem is. The thing i've been most impressed with is how helpful and patient everyone has been with me (especially when my brain gets dyslexic and i can't figure out why someone is doing something to me, like happened last night), because honestly, I was quite intimidated to join you guys knowing what your experience is. I like the way it is, I have fun, I like other people letting me play w/ their decks because I only have a couple.

As far as schedules, Mondays i'm usually at the gym till 6:30ish, but available after that. Tuesdays/Thursdays I alternate my dance class night every week and will be done in May/June, Wednesdays I have other game nights to go to, but could alternate between you guys and the other one I'm going to, Fridays, with notice I could be there, Saturdays ditto Fridays, and Sunday evening I have bowling league for the next 10 weeks.

I have space for people to play. I have an 8ft long table, as well as my kitchen table that can be used, so if anyone wants to play here, let me know. My roommate also likes to play and he's a newbie too, but has some of his own decks.

1:34 pm - Interesting article

StarCityGames.Com has an interesting article on multiplayer strategy and development over time; I learned a lot from reading it.

Check it out here.

Let's discuss. =)

9:39 am - There is another way...

Amidst all this talk of banned and restricted lists, and acceptable deck types, and proxies and all, I ran into an article that gave me an idea.

There are many different multiplayer Magic formats than just 'chaos', which is the semi-official term for everybody sitting in a circle, last man standing. There's Emperor, Two-Headed Giant, and a host of other ways to parcel out players to make a multiplayer game more interesting.

Also, there are different deckbuilding formats than just Type 1, Legacy/1.5, Extended, and Standard. There's 5-color, Peasant Magic, and Highlander, just to name a few. Each format comes with its own rules and deckbuilding restrictions, and they encourage people to be creative without just building the 'best' deck and laying the smack down.

With that in mind, I'd like to propose that we all build some decks, specifically for Multiplayer, that adhere to one of these formats. The format I'd like to try is Elder Dragon Highlander. (An update is here.)

Basically, the premise is that you pick a legendary creature to be your 'General'. This General becomes the focus of your deck. Once you've chosen a General, you build a Highlander deck of 100 cards, using only that General's color(s). All of this probably bears some explaining; I apologize in advance if I'm rambling about things you guys already know.

Highlander is a format template that means you can have only one of any given card, except basic land of course. I think this would be a good thing for our group to try, since it reduces the power of broken cards (only one copy of Skullclamp in a 100-card deck is not that bad), and is more accessible for people with smaller collections, since you don't need to have four of a given card to include it in your deck.

Each player's General starts out removed from the game; you can play it from there at any time you could normally play a creature, but if your General costs less than six, you'd have to pay a total of 6 anyway. For example, if you chose Kentaro, Smiling Cat as your general, even though he costs only 1W, you'd still have to pay 5W total to play him. This encourages people playing large creatures, and discourages quick wins.

I've spent a little time thinking up a sample deck, with Bladewing the Risen as my General. I'll provide it here as a sample of the deckbuilding constraints.

A 100-card Highlander decklist gets reaaaaally long...Collapse )

So that's my clever plan. What do you guys think?
